Amtracks transported the Marines from landing ships in the S. China Sea to the assault beach, on July 20th. The Bear Chain operation is the thirty-fourth assault that Pacific Fleet Amphibious Force ships have launched on the N. Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong positions in South Vietnam, since March 1965.

06 Dec 1965, Near Michelin Plantation, South Vietnam --- December 6, 1965 - Michelin Plantation, South Vietnam: Survivors of a Viet Cong ambush cover the dead and care for the wounded laid out along a narrow jungle road where troops of the U.S. First Infantry Division were attacked by an estimated regiment of guerillas. U.S. forces suffered moderate casualties in the action, which took place some six miles northeast of the Michelin plantation.

Ships of the U.S. Seventh fleet fire almost daily in support of South Vietnamese and U.S. troop operations. The big six inch guns of the Galveston can reach far inland, hurling 105 pound projectiles as far as 14 miles away.
